Oh, how I adore historical fiction!
This novel features the life of Lily, a young girl living in 19th century China. This story of adversity, growth, family, and friendship follows Lily's journey through her childhood years until her adulthood life. Through Lily, we are introduced to the cultural customs of 19th century China, such as foot binding and marriage traditions.
Per usual, here are my 'magic of threes':
Snow flower and the Secret Fan offers an unique touch and perspective of the lives of the women in ninteen-century China. This novel reminds the reader of the hardships of the past and evokes conversation: How has the modern world improved the rights of women? Is it enough? Can we do more? After reading this novel, there is so much to talk about; so much to yell about. This novel leaves you with novel thoughts and concepts.
Despite the pour of historical facts and information, this novel remains engaging and captures the reader. I was intrigued to know more about Lily's faith and endurance. Although the women in the novel are shackled to laws of patriarchy and tradition, they display bravery, courage, and strength in the most dire situation. Trust me, this novel will grip you from the beginning until the end!
- Shocking and distressing
There are moments in the novel when I was gaping. How could this be possible? How could this be allowed? This novel reminds the reader of the struggles and abuse that women from our past have endured. It reminds us of how far we have come, and how far we have to go to prevent similar actions from being conducted. The novel reminds us, that in history, there are always hidden whispers behind doors and an invisible force maintaining order. In this novel, it was the women of China.
